The Development of the Community of New Park

An exhibition at Harrogate Library: 9th September 2024 to 7th October 2024

Harrogate’s origins are found in the development of the Spa Waters industry which prompted the growth of numerous facilities needed for the visitors to the town. The founding of the central railway station between the villages of high and low Harrogate brought the visitors to the area.

However, beyond this there were many facilities required once they arrived. One of these was the provision of 96 gas lamps in the two villages, so that visitors could extend the day of their health regime by taking walks of an evening. Providing gas for these lamps became the seed for the development of the New Park community and the exhibition looks at the life of this community.

Shown in three chapters, the exhibition shows how New Park provided many of the other facilities for the town of Harrogate as well.

Chapter 1. The Growth Of A Community.

Chapter 2. The Working Life Of New Park.

Chapter 3. The Social life of New Park.

This exhibition is accompanied by two talks by Terry-Mike Williams at the Library:
7th October at 2:00pm and 4th November at 2:00pm
